Today I finally sat down with the second sock and carefully followed the fish lips kiss heel instructions that Aunt Georgia emailed me. Shortly after I finished the heel and had worked my way to knitting in the round again, it was time to pack up so that Sean and I could make the drive back down to Ventura. This time I drove, so this is how far I’ve gotten on the sock. Tomorrow morning we are getting up early to run 8 miles for half marathon training, and then I’ll have the rest of the day to continue this sock.

Day 234/365: Second Sock, Pre-Fish Lips Kiss Heel
This morning we woke up in Ventura at 5:30 AM to run 11 miles. This evening we are going to bed in a hotel room in Redlands, having just spent a few lovely hours visiting with old friends. Tomorrow we are heading to L.A. to see the Galaxy play New York City FC.
I knit a few more rounds on the sock while Sean drove us to Redlands. I’m at the point in the sock where I could start the fish lips kiss heel, but I decided to wait until I was in my own living room and not in a moving vehicle to undertake that process.
Day 232/365: Second Sock, Continued
I was able to knit a few more rounds on the second sock. I’m hoping to finish it this weekend, especially since we’ll be spending a lot of time in the car. On Saturday we’re driving to Redlands to visit an old friend, and on Sunday we’ll be going to L.A. for another Galaxy game. Hard to believe that just a few days ago, we were in Florida.
Day 230/365: Second Sock, Started
I knew I would be struggling with jet lag after our quick trip to Florida and back, so when I submitted my time off request a few weeks ago, I purposely added one extra day off in order to catch up on my sleep and rest. Given the prison environment and inmate population, it would have been foolish for me to go to work today less than alert.
I think I’m rested now, but it’s going to be a challenge to get out of bed tomorrow. I just want to stay home and finish my sock.
Day 229/365: The Florida Trip Sock, Done
I started this sock early Thursday morning at LAX and bound it off today when we returned to the Morro Bay house. It’s the first sock I’ve made in which I knitted the fish lips kiss heel. When I first started knitting socks, I made them from the cuff down, with heel flaps. Then I learned how to do Judy’s Magic Cast-On and started knitting socks from the toe up. I liked following Wendy Johnson’s gusset heel pattern because it was an easy one to remember, but I noticed that the finished sock never really fit the recipient properly unless I custom-fitted the foot part to the person, where I’d have them try it on so I could see where to start knitting the gusset.
Anyway, this sock is for my mom, whose foot measures a little over eight and a half inches, so I will probably have the second sock finished by the end of the week. Also, I promised Aunt Georgia that I would send her photos of the completed pair, so that she would know I successfully managed the second fish lips kiss heel on my own.
Day 228/365: 4th Day in Florida, Last Day of The Trip
Hard to believe, but it was just this morning that Sean and I were waking up at the Hilton on Cocoa Beach and going out for breakfast at Bagel World in Cape Canaveral. Now it’s almost midnight, and we’re back in Ventura on the opposite coast, having just gotten home from LAX.
This afternoon, Aunt Georgia taught me how to knit the fish lips kiss heel. I wanted to take a photo for the blog and needed some sort of background for the sock. Then I spotted the antique spinning wheel in front of the fireplace.
Perfect way to display a sock.
At the gate and on the plane, I knit a few more rounds of ribbing for the cuff. It’s ready to be bound off, but that will have to wait for another day because now it’s time for bed.
Day 227/365: 3rd Day of Florida
Today was another activity-filled day of catching up with family and friends. I did find some time this afternoon to add a few more inches to my sock. Tomorrow I hope to get the heel done.
This was the view out the hotel window while I sat comfortably in air-conditioning and knitted. Believe me, it felt a lot more pleasant indoors than it did outdoors that time of the day.
Day 204/365: The Cabin Fever Sock Gets Its Heel Turned
In between sewing and working on my quilted placemat, I’ve also been knitting a few rounds at a time on the Cabin Fever sock. Last night I knit the gusset and the heel. I love the feel of this yarn and the colors are so pretty (Cabin Fever is the name of the colorway), but it’s the middle of July and so humid lately that I know I won’t be wearing these wool socks any time soon.
Day 198/365: TGIF
For the last four weeks, we’ve had to make the 350-mile-round-trip-in-24-hours to Ventura and back to Morro Bay because of my Monday morning allergy testing appointments. This weekend will be the first time in a month that we don’t have to do any long-distance driving. I am so glad. I plan to sit around the house all weekend and knit and read and clean the bathrooms and do laundry– anything but get in the car.
Day 197/365: The Day a Surprise Visitor Came to My Group
Every Thursday afternoon, I facilitate a treatment group for inmates who are serving life sentences. There are currently eight members in the group, and we always sit in a circle. Today, the inmate seated directly across from me was talking when I noticed some movement along the top of his shoulder. The movement came from a small lump that had been prominently sitting under his shirt, above his shoulder, for some time since he’d entered the room and group had started. He kept talking, but I’d stopped paying attention because I was focused on what was starting to poke out of his shirt collar, along his neck. It was a little pointy face, covered in white and brown fur.
“Uh, Mr. P–,” I said, openly staring and pointing a finger at his shoulder. “What is that?”
“Oh, that,” he said. He reached into his shirt collar and gently pushed back down what was clearly a small animal. “That’s just my mouse.”
