Day 243/365: The Florida Trip Sock #2, Almost Done

I did a lot of driving today.  I drove to the allergist’s office in Oxnard for my immunotherapy shot.  I drove to a number of places in Ventura for errands.  I drove 150 miles back to Morro Bay.  I drove several more additional miles to Cayucos and around Morro Bay for more errands.  I am tired of being in the car.  Luckily, I have this sock to finish and help me unwind.

Day 241/365: The Florida Trip Sock #2 Gets Its Heel

Today I finally sat down with the second sock and carefully followed the fish lips kiss heel instructions that Aunt Georgia emailed me.  Shortly after I finished the heel and had worked my way to knitting in the round again, it was time to pack up so that Sean and I could make the drive back down to Ventura.  This time I drove, so this is how far I’ve gotten on the sock.  Tomorrow morning we are getting up early to run 8 miles for half marathon training, and then I’ll have the rest of the day to continue this sock.

Day 240/365: TGIF

Between my long days at work and half marathon training when I get home from work, I haven’t had any time to knit, sew, or crochet in these last few days.  I am so glad to have a four-day weekend coming up.

In the meantime, this is dinner.

I’m going to have to do some grocery shopping, too.

Day 239/365: Bagels for Dinner

I got home from work this evening and decided that I felt like eating bread and cheese.  I didn’t feel like driving out to the grocery store, so I pulled out my well-worn copy of Vegan Brunch by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and got to mixing up some bagel dough.

Three hours later, I’ve got my dinner.  And tomorrow’s breakfast.

Day 238/365: New Coloring Book and No Time to Color

I got home this evening around 6 PM after a long day in the joint and was pleasantly surprised to find that my new coloring book had arrived.

Unfortunately, I was also scheduled to run 60 minutes today for half marathon training.  So I went out and did that, and then I came home and stretched, and then I made dinner, ate it, cleaned up, put together my lunch for tomorrow, and now it’s ten minutes to my bedtime.

I think I’ll go color.

Day 236/365: My Cherimoya Seedlings

8.24.2015A

Back in June, when my mom was visiting from Hawaii, I purchased a locally grown cherimoya fruit for us to eat as a snack.  “Save the seeds,” my mom said.  “You can grow your own tree from them.”

I followed her directions and wrapped the seeds in a few layers of damp paper towels that I then sealed in a plastic sandwich bag and set on the windowsill.  After several weeks, a few of the seeds had sprouted.  This is what they looked like.

Isn’t that neat?  I’m hoping to nurture these little seedlings and coax them into becoming a stronger plant that will eventually be big enough to plant in the yard.  In the meantime, I’m very tickled with these little sprouts that I planted in a blue Fiestaware teacup.

Day 234/365: Second Sock, Pre-Fish Lips Kiss Heel

This morning we woke up in Ventura at 5:30 AM to run 11 miles.  This evening we are going to bed in a hotel room in Redlands, having just spent a few lovely hours visiting with old friends.  Tomorrow we are heading to L.A. to see the Galaxy play New York City FC.

I knit a few more rounds on the sock while Sean drove us to Redlands.  I’m at the point in the sock where I could start the fish lips kiss heel, but I decided to wait until I was in my own living room and not in a moving vehicle to undertake that process.

Day 230/365: Second Sock, Started

I knew I would be struggling with jet lag after our quick trip to Florida and back, so when I submitted my time off request a few weeks ago, I purposely added one extra day off in order to catch up on my sleep and rest.  Given the prison environment and inmate population, it would have been foolish for me to go to work today less than alert.

I think I’m rested now, but it’s going to be a challenge to get out of bed tomorrow.  I just want to stay home and finish my sock.

Day 229/365: The Florida Trip Sock, Done

8.17.2015

I started this sock early Thursday morning at LAX and bound it off today when we returned to the Morro Bay house.  It’s the first sock I’ve made in which I knitted the fish lips kiss heel.  When I first started knitting socks, I made them from the cuff down, with heel flaps.  Then I learned how to do Judy’s Magic Cast-On and started knitting socks from the toe up.  I liked following Wendy Johnson’s gusset heel pattern because it was an easy one to remember, but I noticed that the finished sock never really fit the recipient properly unless I custom-fitted the foot part to the person, where I’d have them try it on so I could see where to start knitting the gusset.

Anyway, this sock is for my mom, whose foot measures a little over eight and a half inches, so I will probably have the second sock finished by the end of the week.  Also, I promised Aunt Georgia that I would send her photos of the completed pair, so that she would know I successfully managed the second fish lips kiss heel on my own.
